The recreation and golfing community suffered a great loss on May 9, 1998 with the passing of Dr. Don Cardea due to pancreatic cancer.
Dr. Don was a professor in the recreation field, teaching at Rowan University, The College of New Jersey (formerly Trenton State College), and Temple University. He played a major role in professionalizing the field of Recreation. Don was a strong proponent of the concept that people could mold themselves into better individuals through recreation. Don was a very active member of the New Jersey Recreation and Parks Association and served as its president in 1976-77.
Don also had a strong love for the game of golf, teaching the sport from 1963 until his passing in 1998. He founded the South Jersey Golf Schools in 1980 which has touched a multitude of golfers from South Jersey. Don was the head golf coach at Rutgers University at Camden from 1983-1987.
Proceeds from the Dr. Don tournament will benefit the Fox Chase Cancer Center in the hope that someday a cure will be found for the disease which took Dr. Don away from us. To date, the Dr. Don Tournament has raised over $50,000.00 for Fox Chase.
